Scoping Review of Sorghum and Millet Grain Quality Preferences

This review aims to understand how grain preferences of sorghum and millet differ between regions, communities, end-uses, and additional variables. Currently, there is no documented standardization or definitions for sorghum and millet grain quality traits, yet these cereals are a staple crop throughout several populations. Improved varieties are not always adopted readily, and breeders often do not understand the nuances of grain quality preferences within their target populations.

We will compile all literature discussing sorghum and millet grain quality preferences, specifically for human consumption. We will extract preferences and identify commonalities in end uses between regions, but will detect differences in the desired traits of the grain. This review will include a comprehensive list of sorghum and millet grain quality attributes for different grain products and map them to specific regions/countries. This review ideally will be used by sorghum breeding programs to set breeding goals and determine methodology.
